Chapter 34

Location & Time: Former State of Qi – 213 BCE

The previous day’s activities had left Li Jun exhausted and drained. Li Jun’s self-inflicted, ghastly wounds had been successfully mended by Jiao Ai, but the young woman’s powers were still in their infancy. As a result, the loss of blood could not be restored, and had left Li Jun visibly weak. Jin Wei predicted that it would take a few days to fully recuperate, and he insisted that she rest comfortably in order to be fully functioning as soon as possible.

Li Jun had not spoken with Jiao Ai since the incident the day before. She assumed the young woman would not want to speak with her for a while and did not want to press things too soon. However, now that Jiao Ai’s ability had been discovered, the young woman needed guidance, and soon. The inner demon, fresh from its slumber, would be able to imprison her mind and she would be lost forever. If the demon could take control and bend her toward the forces of evil, it would ensure victory for their enemies.

Jin Wei predicted that Cai also held considerable talents, but unlike the others, he was unable to glean specifically what they were. His ability to prognosticate events in the future was unpredictable and imprecise, but advantageous nonetheless. When the time was right, he was able to direct Li Jun in the general vicinity of where Cai would be, but unable to give a fixed location. Either way, Li Jun was thankful for his predictions, and his advice had proven invaluable an infinite number of times.

The latest report worried Li Jun, and although he would never show it, she knew that Jin Wei shared her concern. The chief spy embedded in Xianyang had at long last sent a report. It had been dated a few months before, but was held up because of their sudden change in location. The time delay had not dampened the seriousness of the message that was delivered today

“Guide: dreadful news. All of these years the elements of evil have been under our nose, and we did not realize it until now. The ones known to the inner circle as The Triad have demonstrated a kinship with certain powers yet to be determined. It shows that the Tiger is preparing to strike soon! We will continue to serve and find out what abilities serve evil and report again soon.” It was simply signed “L.”

The Triad? That name sounds vaguely familiar, she thought to herself. “What troubles you, Mistress Li?” asked an approaching man. Having been staring at the ground, Li Jun quickly regained her composure and turned with a smile. Consciously tucking the note away inside her shirt close to her breast, she replied, “Ah, Master Mu! I am glad you are here. I apologize for continuing to push back the continuation of our earlier discussions. Helping to lead an organization, even one as small as ours, consumes a great deal of one’s time.
